SCHEDULING:
We select our vacation weeks each July for the following September–September cycle, giving everyone ample time to plan for travel and family events. We share holiday call equitably and accommodate Christmas, Spring, and Summer breaks.
Schedules are posted three months in advance using Lightning Bolt, making it easy to split and swap shifts as needed.
Seven radiologists work each weekday, organized as follows:
ON SITE: CX1, CX2 and CRG1, CRG2
At both Comox Valley and Campbell River Hospitals, two radiologists are on-site daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Our workflow is structured to be efficient and varied: we alternate between reading X-ray and ultrasound in the mornings, and CT and MRI in the afternoons. A light procedural load — including thoracentesis, paracentesis, biopsies, and joint injections — keeps the day interesting without overwhelming volume.
We've also developed a unique outpatient system to ensure a manageable workday, helping everyone finish on time. For those looking to boost their income, there's optional flexibility to take on additional outpatient cases at your own pace.
OFF SITE: WE1, WE2/Mammo, WE3, WE4, OP1, Float
Off-site shifts focus on outpatient work and are designed for flexibility. Except for mammography, these shifts are not "live" — you'll be assigned a packet of outpatient CT/MRIs (typically 36 cases) to report within five business days, on your own schedule.
This gives you control over your day — whether that's handling cases early, picking up kids, hitting appointments, or booking a Friday afternoon tee time. (Our OP1 shift famously pairs well with a midday round!)
ON CALL:
Weekday call runs from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m., covering only emergent and inpatient cases. To keep the evening pace reasonable, a selection of outpatient X-rays and ultrasounds from the day are offloaded to the call reader, and emergent X-rays are only reported until 10 p.m.
Overnight CT call volume is light, typically 0–3 cases per night. Each partner covers approximately five weekday calls and one weekend call per month, shared equally.
Weekend call is split to allow some downtime:
Day shift: 8 a.m.–6 p.m., paid at 1.25 per diem - recognizing the sacrifice of giving up a weekend day.
Evening shift: 6 p.m.–8 a.m.
